Nursing and computers have always been a perfect mix. In general, nurses are trying out new computer systems whenever possible. However, it is an inevitable evolution of workflow in hospitals today. ”It was so easy before, when all I had to do was give (command) to the clerk.” ”This new system is such a mess. Why can not we keep our old system? “ ”It takes my time away from patient care.” ”This will never work.” As an RN working toward the computerized health care, these reviews are commonplace when I travel there to different facilities. Why I wanted to do With billions of dollars allocated to deploy this project to multiple facilities nationwide, I wanted to be part of it. “It has never been done before at this scale,” said Vicki Levario, director of system solutions and deployment at Kaiser Permanente Southern California Region. When I was offered this job, I did not hesitated. There was a marriage of two things: I feel comfortable with – clinical content and computers. The magnitude of this project can be appreciated when you take into account the 8 million Kaiser members affected by it. By 2007, all the 12,000 doctors and 150,000 employees in the Kaiser organization should be fully trained and use the software in their workflow. After several weeks of involvement in this project, I began to see what this Herculean undertaking will be. Resistance ”Good luck for this work. They are wasting their money. It will never happen,” one doctor told me one day. Healthcare Automation is an inevitable evolution, but met no resistance. There are those who are so resistant to change they would rather retire than work under those conditions. This feeling is not unique to this organization.
